The SBW Berlin scholarship for international students supports young people from abroad who are already socially committed. The program aims to help students use the skills they acquire during their studies to develop and implement social or non-profit projects at organizations in their home countries. Funding is provided to pursue a Bachelor's or Master's degree program at a university or a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) in Berlin or Potsdam. In principle, all scientific, social, and artistic disciplines are eligible.

BENEFITS

• The scholarship covers the necessary living expenses of the recipients for a maximum of 48 months (equivalent to the regular period of the study program).
• The benefits include:Full coverage of tuition fees.
• A furnished room in a shared student flat in Berlin.
• A monthly cost-of-living allowance of 480 Euro.
• A possible travel contribution for the journey to Berlin before the start of the course and for the journey home after successful completion (up to 500 Euro within Europe, up to 1,000 Euro outside of Europe).

ELIGIBILITY

• Be foreign nationals whose home countries have a particular need for development assistance.
• Be between 18 and 30 years old.
• Have professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit/social sector.
• Have not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months prior to the application.
• Have average grades corresponding to a German grade point average of at least 2.0.
• Be able to prove a relatively low net household income.Have no first-degree family members residing permanently in Germany.
• Have a strong intention to work in their home country for at least 18 months after graduation (or engage in non-profit work until a notarized repayment plan has been fulfilled).
• Apply before the start of their university education, or be fully enrolled in the 1st, 2nd, or max 3rd semester at a state-recognized university.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

• A Letter of Recommendation from a non-profit organization or social institution.
• Application form (access is provided only after the recommendation letter is successfully reviewed).
• Project description (2 to 5 pages) detailing the planned social project.
• Qualification for university entrance.
• Copy of the highest academic degree and the latest school or university certificate showing the grade point average and a grade overview.
• Information about the net household income.
• Optional but recommended: Admission letter to a university in Berlin/Potsdam, an internationally recognized language certificate, previous work/internship certificates, and extra recommendation letters.

• The non-profit organization or social institution must submit a Letter of Recommendation on behalf of the applicant as a PDF directly to application@sbw.berlin.
• After a careful review of this letter, outstanding prospects will receive an email containing a link to access the official application portal.
