The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is a highly competitive scholarship designed for outstanding international students enrolling in a full-time Master's degree programme at Leiden University. With only around 25 scholarships available each year, it rewards academic excellence and provides significant financial support to top-tier graduates looking to advance their education in the Netherlands.

BENEFITS
The LExS is a partial scholarship awarded for the duration of the study programme. Depending on the evaluation, recipients will receive one of the following tuition fee deductions
- €10,000 of the tuition fee
- €15,000 of the tuition fee
- €17,500 of the tuition fee
- €18,500 of the tuition fee
- €19,000 of the tuition fee
- Since this is not a fully funded scholarship, students must still demonstrate proof of sufficient funds for their residence permit/student visa application.
ELIGIBILITY
- Nationality: Hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and not be eligible for Dutch student finance (exceptions apply for UK students depending on residency, and all nationalities are welcome for Advanced LLMs & MSc International Relations and Diplomacy).
- Academic Excellence: Be among the top 10% of graduates in their previous, relevant study programme(s).
- Programme Exclusions: Not applying for an LLM (non-advanced) or MSc programme at Leiden Law School, or any programme starting in February.
- Degree Exclusions: Must not have already obtained a Leiden University Master’s degree (unless a specific prior Master's is mandatory for the new programme).
HOW TO APPLY
- Step 1: Apply online for admission to a Master's programme at Leiden University and pay the application fee (Note: processing takes up to 3 working days).
- Step 2: Return to the Apply screen in the online application portal and click on the Scholarships section.
- Step 3: Indicate your intent to apply for the LExS and upload a motivation letter (PDF, max. 500 words) explaining why you deserve the award.
- Step 4: Submit your scholarship application strictly before the 1 December 2026 deadline.
