Four innovation campuses in Limburg, the Netherlands, form the Brightlands. The Brightlands campi bring together entrepreneurs, researchers and students to innovate and create international breakthroughs together in chemistry and materials, health, agrifood, data science and smart digital services. Depending on your choice of study programme the campi can be situated in Maastricht, Heerlen, Sittard-Geleen or Venlo.
We will alternate between two of the four campuses each year. For the academic year 2027-2028 the study programmes affiliated with both the Chemelot campus and the Maastricht Health campus are participating in the application for the UM NL Brightlands Talent Scholarship. See step 1 at the application procedure to check the participating study programmes.

Benefit
- Fully Funded scholarship (2 full coverage scholarships available per academic year).
- Full tuition fee waiver.
- Living expenses: €20,150 (for 13 months) or €38,750 (for 25 months).

- Accommodation: A mandatory room allocated until 16 July 2028 is provided (Accepting the scholarship means you accept the room).
Eligibility
- Must hold nationality in a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Surinam, and not have dual nationality from an EU/EEA country.
- Must have applied for admission to a participating master's programme at UM for the 2027-2028 academic year and submitted the application file in full by December 10, 2026.
- Must be 35 years of age or younger on September 1, 2027.
- Must have obtained excellent results during prior education (GPA of 7.5 out of 10 or higher).
- Must have never participated in a degree-seeking higher education programme in the Netherlands (Exchange programmes are acceptable).
- Must agree to become an active Brightlands and UM ambassador and participate in the thesis-internship-programme (TIP) at a Brightlands company.
Required Documents
- Curriculum Vitae (max two A4 pages).
- Letter of motivation (using the official UM template).
- Proof of academic excellence (Transcript showing a GPA of 7.5+ and a document explaining the grading system).
- Personal statement of financial needs.
- One reference letter (dated no earlier than February 2026) with the contact details of the referee.
How to Apply
- Step 1: Apply for an eligible master’s programme at UM via HERE. Submit the complete admission application and pay any required handling fee by December 10, 2026.
- Step 2: Once you receive your UM student ID number, log in to the UM scholarship application portal.
- Step 3: Fill out the HERE, upload all required documents (in .doc, .docx, or PDF format), and submit before the scholarship deadline on February 1, 2027 (23:59 CET).
