The Institute for Law & AI’s Summer Fellowship (US) is a paid program that offers law students, professionals, and academics the opportunity to participate at the leading edge of AI law and policy, with a particular focus on United States Law and Policy. The program supports intellectual and professional development, combining tailored mentorship with career planning and opportunities to apply legal thinking to current governance questions with policymakers, researchers, and other leaders in the field. Previous Summer Fellows have gone on to pursue law and policy roles at the US Department of Commerce, leading AI companies, academia, and think tanks, including LawAI itself.

Benefit

• Weekly subsidy of $2,000 for the 10-week duration.

Eligibility

• Open to graduate law students (e.g., LLM or JD), incoming 1L, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, legal academics, and professionals looking to transition into AI-focused roles.
• Must demonstrate a strong understanding of the legal principles applicable to AI regulation in US law and policy.
• Prior experience or expertise in AI-specific research is not required.
• Must be able to commit to full-time in-person participation from June 14 to August 20, 2027, in Washington, DC.

How to Apply

• Step 2: Candidates will be invited to an asynchronous exploratory interview (~20 minutes).
• Step 3: A 45-minute project interview with a member of the research staff.
